This beautifully handcrafted piece is made out of sea shells and is commonly used by men of the Asmat ethnic group of Papua. The nose pierce symbolizes masculinity and serves a purpose of instilling fear in rivals.
The Asmat are amongst the most well-known woodcarvers in the Pacific. The art traditionally produced by the Asmat are sought by collectors worldwide.
