A religious piece originating from Sumba and made out of Buffalo bone, this piece serves to carry Betel leaves & Areca nuts. Betel leaves & Areca nuts are usually chewed by elders as a tradition in Sumba and often during the process of weddings.
The mixture of Betel leaves & Areca nuts is referred to as Betel quid which would typically also include spices and slaked lime. The traditional elders chewing the Betel quid experience a euphoric feeling along with alertness.
